We have selected an elder’s home named VICTORIA HOME FOR INCURABLES which is in Sri Jayawardhanapura Mawatha, Rajagiriya. The residents suffer from incurable diseases.  Most of them need wheelchairs and there is a shortage of more than 10 wheelchairs. The residents suffer not only from mental and physical illnesses, but also, struggle with financial difficulties. So thus, they are not in a condition of purchasing wheelchairs for themselves.

This is about giving those elders another sense of hope. From the moment of being disabled, anyone would feel helpless. So, providing wheelchairs is like giving them a new hope of seeing the world again and they can move freely as before.

 

They can move outside and feel the fresh air and that would definitely provide them a physical as well as mental wellbeing. No one likes to stay caged inside a room on a bed for the rest of their lives. So, this will bring the residents a beam of happiness again.

In addition of providing mobility, a wheelchair provides the benefit of a physical health and a quality life for the user. Generally, a wheelchair can serve to reduce common illnesses such as progression of deformities or contractures, pressure sores and other secondary conditions, by combining with an adequate user training. This is a very useful device for the disabled people with spinal code injuries and similar conditions. Increase in physical functions and independent mobility reduces the dependent nature of the patients. Usage of wheelchairs by disabled people improves their respirations and digestion, increases head trunk and upper extremity control and overall stability with a proper posture support.
